Chief MinerChief Dave Miner is the 12th Chief of Police for the Newport Beach Police Department, with more than two decades of law enforcement experience and community leadership. He was appointed Chief of Police in 2025 after serving as Acting Chief.
 
Chief Miner began his career with the Newport Beach Police Department in 2002, serving as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, SWAT Team member, Property Crimes detective, and Crimes Against Persons detective. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2011, supervising patrol and specialized units, including SWAT, the Field Training Program, Crime Suppression Unit, and Professional Standards Unit. In 2018, he was promoted to Lieutenant, serving as Patrol Watch Commander, Crisis Response Unit Commander, and Support Services and Detective Division Lieutenant. In 2023, he was promoted to Deputy Chief, overseeing the Patrol/Traffic and Detective Divisions.

 

Chief Miner holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Brigham Young University and is a graduate of several advanced law enforcement leadership programs, including the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute, the Force Science Institute Certification Course, and the California Police Chiefs Executive Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate University’s Drucker School of Management.

Chief Miner is actively engaged with the community, serving on several advisory boards. He is also a longtime member of the Newport Beach Police Department’s Baker to Vegas running team.

As Chief of Police, Dave Miner leads a professional team of sworn and civilian personnel dedicated to public safety, organizational excellence, and strong partnerships with the Newport Beach community.
