Last Saturday, we received a call reporting an injured mallard duck with an arrow through his neck swimming around a lake in Newport Beach. The Animal Control Officer who responded used a small boat to attempt to catch the duck in order to get him medical treatment, however the duck was able to fly away. The next day, our partners at the Costa Mesa Police Department responded to a call about the same duck, who was now in Costa Mesa, just a half-mile away from the Newport Beach lake. Their officers were able to catch him and take him to the Wetlands & Wildlife Care Center. The arrow was removed and the mallard is receiving veterinary care. The NBPD is investigating this incident as a case of animal cruelty and unlawful hunting. Anyone with information about this case, or who can identify those responsible, is asked to contact NBPD Animal Control Officer Nick Ott at (949) 644-3688 ext. 2716 or nott@nbpd.org.

It's official! From Acting Chief to Chief. Say hello to Chief Cartwright! Joe Cartwright, a 21-year veteran of the Newport Beach Police Department, has been named as its next Chief of Police, City Manager Grace Leung announced Monday. Cartwright has held a variety of field and command-level positions in just over two decades with the department, serving most recently as acting chief since late December, following the retirement of his predecessor, Jon Lewis. “Chief Cartwright brings a tremendous breadth and depth of public safety leadership experience to this position,” Leung said. “He is a proven leader with a passion for providing the best possible police services to the Newport Beach community.” Cartwright will officially step into the new role next month when he will become the 11th Chief of Police in NBPD history. He leads a staff of 233 employees, who serve in five divisions and a variety of specialized units. Cartwright began his law enforcement career with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1999 and joined the NBPD in 2002. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice, a Master of Arts degree in organizational management, and is a graduate of several advanced law enforcement training courses. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Cartwright serves as the chairman of the board of directors for the Newport Beach 1st Battalion, 1st Marines Foundation, which provides support and relief for service members and their families.

This St. Patrick's Day don't push your luck by letting drunk - drive. The Newport Beach Police Department will be on alert for suspected impaired drivers and reminds the community to celebrate responsibly by not driving under the influence. Additional officers will be on patrol March 17th looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. "Leave your keys at home and plan ahead before you celebrate St. Patrick's Day," Lieutenant Little said. "Designate a sober driver, schedule a ride share or make other plans to get home safely if you plan to consume alcohol." According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), St. Patrick's Day is one of the deadliest times on our nation's roads. In 2020, more than 11,000 people in the U.S. died in drunk-driving crashes. The Newport Beach Police Department's Lieutenant Eric Little wants to warn the community that alcohol is not the only substance that can cause impairment. Marijuana, prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may also impair. Do your research and understand how certain drugs may affect your driving ability. 🍀 ☘️
