On June 24, 2026, at 12:46 p.m., officers from the Newport Beach Police Department responded to a major traffic collision at the intersection of East Coast Highway and Newport Coast Drive.

The preliminary investigation determined that a vehicle collided with a pedestrian in the westbound lanes of Coast Highway, west of the intersection. Witnesses at the scene immediately rendered life-saving measures to the pedestrian until emergency personnel arrived. Despite those efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by Newport Beach Fire Department personnel.

The Newport Beach Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded and is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The identity of the deceased will not be released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
