Patrol and Traffic Division Commander


Captain Dale Johnson

Captain Dale Johnson is currently assigned as the Patrol and Traffic Division Commander.  The Patrol Division Commander exercises line command over personnel in the Patrol and Traffic Division and serves as a member of the Command Staff and the Management Team. Throughout his career at the Newport Beach Police Department, Captain Johnson has distinguished himself by serving in all five of the Department's Divisions.

After beginning his law enforcement career with the Pima County Sheriff's Department in 1984, Captain Johnson joined the Newport Beach Police Department in 1987.  During his career, the Captain has held varied positions, including Field Training Officer, Burglary Detective, Narcotics Detective, Accident Investigator, Crimes Against Persons Detective, Hostage Negotiations Team Coordinator, Traffic Sergeant and Special Events Coordinator, and Professional Standards Sergeant.  As a Lieutenant, he served as a Watch Commander and Support Services Commander.

Captain Johnson has received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Studies/Emergency Management from California State University, Long Beach.  He is also a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Institute and is a Facilitator for the International Association of Chiefs of Police "Leadership in Police Organizations" Program.

Captain Johnson grew up in Tucson, Arizona.  In his spare time he enjoys coaching youth sports, Golf, and Scuba Diving.
