Deputy Chief David W. McGill

Deputy Chief David W. McGill is currently assigned as the Patrol and Traffic Division Commander. The Patrol Division Commander exercises line command over personnel in the combined Patrol and Traffic Divisions and serves as a member of the Command Staff and the Management Team.

Deputy Chief McGill was raised in Newport Beach and graduated from Corona del Mar High School. He received a Navy ROTC scholarship and first attended the University of Southern California, before transferring to the University of California at Irvine where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Pre-Medicine. In 2000, he earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration (MPA) at California State University at Long Beach, graduating summa cum laude. He is a graduate of the West Point Leadership Program, California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Executive Development Course, and the 212th Session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy.

Deputy Chief McGill began his law enforcement career with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in January 1987. He has worked a wide variety of assignments during his career including Patrol, Special Problems Unit, Detectives, Internal Affairs Division, Anti-Terrorist Division, Patrol Watch Commander, Detective Division Commanding Officer, and the Adjutant to the Chiefs of Fiscal and Support Bureau and the Chief of Staff. During his career, he has received numerous commendations and citations, including the Police Medal, the second highest award for valor.

In addition to belonging to several professional associations, he has been a member of the California Peace Officers’ Association (CPOA) since 1997 and currently sits on the Board of Directors as the Association’s Treasurer. He teaches undergraduate and graduate Criminal Justice courses, and he recently co-developed and teaches a three-day Internal Affairs Course for Investigators. For the past several years, he has been an active participant in the Mentor Program at Newport Harbor High School, where he has mentored hundreds of students interested in a law enforcement career.

Deputy Chief McGill and his wife live in Newport Beach. Two of their three children have graduated California universities and are living in Southern California, and the third is currently attending a local college.
