Lieutenant Tom Fischbacher is currently assigned as the Area 2 Commander in the Patrol Division. Area Commanders are responsible for their designated section of the City and serve as members of the Management Team. Area 2 includes the residential communities of Dover Shores, Santa Ana Heights, Big Canyon, Eastbluff, Newport Bluffs, Newport North and Balboa Island, as well as the Fashion Island Shopping Center and the commercial district adjacent to John Wayne Airport. Lieutenant Fischbacher also oversees the Field Training Officer Program, the Bike Officer Unit, and the R.A.C.E.S. Program.
Lieutenant Fischbacher came to the Newport Beach Police Department in 1989 as a Reserve Police Officer. He graduated from the University of California at Irvine with a Bachelors degree in Social Ecology and a Minor in Political Science, and started his full time career at NBPD, in 1991.
Lieutenant Fischbacher has worked as a Patrol Officer, Burglary Detective, Crimes Against Persons Detective, SWAT Officer, Reserve Coordinator and Field Training Officer. In 2002, he achieved the rank of Sergeant and worked in Patrol, performing ancillary duties as a SWAT Supervisor, Reserve Coordinator Supervisor, and Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services Coordinator Supervisor. As a Sergeant, he also worked in the Traffic Division, where he was responsible for the supervision of Special Events and Traffic Detectives.
In 2009, Lieutenant Fischbacher was selected to represent Newport Beach as a supervisor at the Joint Power Authority, Airborne Law Enforcement Services (ABLE). While assigned to ABLE, Lieutenant Fischbacher completed Tactical Flight Officer Training and acquired his private and commercial helicopter pilot license with an instrument flight rating.
Lieutenant Fischbacher enjoys being active in the Newport-Mesa community.
