Frequently Asked Questions

What is National Night Out?

On Tuesday, August 1st, neighborhoods throughout Newport Beach are invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the “34th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) crime and drug prevention event.  National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Newport Beach Police Department, will involve over 16,124 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.  In all, over 37.8 million people are expected to participate in "America’s Night Out Against Crime" this August 1st.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods a safer, better place to live.  National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community and provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

This August 1st, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. residents throughout Newport Beach and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outdoor lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and police

What do I need to do to set up my own National Night Out event?

It's easy! Simply plan an event for neighbors to attend the night of August 1st.  It can be as formal or as informal as you would like.

What do most neighborhoods do for National Night Out?

Creativity and individuality are what make this night fun! You can organize an ice cream social, neighborhood potluck or host a BBQ. The most important thing you can provide is outreach to your neighbors. National Night Out is a time for neighbors to join with police officers to communicate and establish working relationships.

Will the police officers working in my area stop by?

Yes, if you sign-up and request an officer through the Crime Prevention Unit by calling 949-644-3699, we will make every effort possible to have an area officer stop by your event sometime that evening to participate in the festivities.

Does my event have to run from 7 PM - 10 PM?

No. These are general guidelines. Your neighborhood may want your event to run from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.  Just let us know what your preferred time is so we can notify the officers.

For more information on this event or if you wish to host a gathering in your own neighborhood, please contact The Crime Prevention Unit at 949-644-3699.
